A giant container ship remained stuck sideways in Egypt's Suez Canal for a fifth day on Saturday, as authorities attempted to free the vessel and reopen a crucial waterway whose blockage is disrupting global shipping and trade.

The 400-meter-long Ever Given ran aground diagonally across the single-lane stretch of the southern canal on Tuesday morning after losing the ability to steer amid high winds and a dust storm, the Suez Canal Authority said in a statement.

The SCA said Ever Given has been straightened in the canal and further tugging operations would resume once the tide rises later on Monday.

There are 1.2 billion metric tons of cargo moving through the waterway annually, and about 1.9 million barrels of oil are shipped through the Suez Canal each day, according to the Suez Canal Authority and Lloyd's List Intelligence.

Each day of blockage disrupts more than$9 billion worth of goods, according to Lloyd’s List, which translates to about$400 million per hour.

The blockage of the Suez Canal by a skyscraper-sized cargo ship could worsen monthslong snarls in the global supply chain, causing shortages of products such as toilet paper, coffee and furniture in the US.

At least 20 of the boats delayed due to a stricken container ship in theSuez canalare carrying livestock, according to marine tracking data, raising concerns about the welfare of the animals if the logjam becomes protracted.

Five of the ships identified had loaded animals in Spain, and nine hadloaded inRomaniaearlier this month, according to the NGO Animals International.

“Getting stuck on board means there is a risk for the animals of starvation, dehydration, injuries, waste buildup so they can’t lie down, and nor can the crew get rid of dead animal bodies in the Suez canal. It’s basically a ticking biohazard timebomb for animals and the crew and any person involved,” Gerit Weidinger, EU coordinator for Animals International said.
